Mid-19th-century French Catholic Paroissien Romain bound in black pebbled leather with blind-stamped decorative bands incorporating cross and key motifs, symbolically referencing the authority of the Church and the Keys of St. Peter. The spine is similarly tooled and titled Paroissien Romain.
The book retains its original silver-toned metal clasp and hinge hardware, each clasp ornamented with a cross-and-keys device; both clasps remain intact and functional. Page edges are gilt, now richly mellowed with age.
The interior opens to an engraved devotional frontispiece, followed by the printed title page reading:
PAROISSIEN ROMAIN…
Dijon — Antoine Maitre, Éditeur — 1868
Text is printed in French and Latin and includes the Offices of Sundays and Feast Days, the Proper and Common of Saints, the Stations of the Cross, and a Tableau des Fêtes mobiles. An organically preserved pressed fern is present between the pages, likely placed by a former owner as a personal devotional or remembrance marker.

The Paroissien Romain was the standard prayer and liturgical companion for lay Catholics in 19th-century France, allowing worshippers to follow the Mass and daily offices in parallel with the Roman Missal. Editions bound with metal clasps were intended for frequent personal use, protecting the text block when carried to church or kept in a private devotional setting.
Dijon publishers such as Antoine Maitre produced durable yet refined editions for provincial and urban Catholic households alike, particularly during the Second Empire and early Third Republic, when personal piety and beautifully bound religious books were central to domestic religious life.
