Additional Description:
A beautifully aged and authentically preserved 18th-century Italian religious volume titled Panegirici e Discorsi del Padre Girolamo Tornielli della Compagnia di Gesù, printed in Milan and Turin. This compact devotional work is bound in its original vellum binding, now richly patinated to a warm parchment tone, with visible age wear that adds to its historic character.
The spine retains a partially intact paper title label reading “Panegirici,” with remnants of early cataloging or shelf markings. The text block is finished with striking red-dyed edges, a hallmark of quality binding from the period, and remains structurally sound.
Internally, the book features crisp early typography with decorative engraved elements, including a Jesuit emblem vignette on the title page. The printing is attributed to Michel’ Angelo Morano, a known Italian printer of the period, and includes ecclesiastical approval (“Con licenza de’ Superiori”), confirming its religious and institutional context.
The work itself consists of sermons and panegyrics—formal religious orations—typical of Jesuit scholarship and preaching traditions of the 17th–18th centuries. The typography, paper quality, and layout are consistent with late Baroque Italian printing, with clear, legible text and attractive period formatting.
A highly decorative and scholarly piece, ideal for collectors of early religious texts, Jesuit history, or European vellum-bound books.
Era:
18th Century (circa mid-to-late 1700s)
History:
Girolamo Tornielli was a Jesuit priest and writer whose works contributed to the tradition of Catholic preaching and rhetoric during the Baroque period. Jesuit publications like this were widely circulated across Italy and Europe, often printed with ecclesiastical approval and intended for both clergy and educated lay audiences.
Books printed in Milan and Turin during this time reflect the strong intellectual and religious networks of Northern Italy, particularly under the influence of the Catholic Counter-Reformation. Vellum bindings were commonly used for durability and were often left undecorated, emphasizing function and longevity over ornament.
Provenance:
Italy (printed in Milan and Turin); acquired through the European antiques trade.
Materials:
Vellum binding, laid paper, ink, paper spine label, red-dyed text block edges
Dimensions:
[To be provided]
Disclaimers:
Visible wear consistent with age, including staining, toning, and surface marks to the vellum binding. Spine label partially worn with loss. Red staining visible along spine likely from age or prior shelving conditions. Interior pages show light foxing and toning but remain legible and intact. Structurally stable overall.
