Additional Description:
A richly decorated antique French Catholic missal titled Paroissien Romain, housed in an exceptional full leather binding with elaborate gilt tooling. The covers are adorned with an ornate border of scrolling foliage, florals, and star motifs, finely stamped in gold, framing a central cartouche—further personalized with the gilt initials “J G.” The spine features raised bands, gilt compartment decoration, and a clearly legible title panel.
The text block retains striking, highly reflective gilt edges, indicative of a higher-quality devotional binding intended for presentation or special personal use. Inside, the book opens to beautifully printed pages framed with decorative borders, including ecclesiastical motifs and figures, characteristic of the refined output of Tours-based publisher Alfred Mame et Fils.
The interior endpapers are particularly charming, featuring a repeating floral pattern in gold and slate tones—adding a luxurious decorative element rarely preserved in such condition. The title page dates the work to 1890, approved by the Archbishop of Tours, placing it firmly in the late 19th-century devotional tradition.
Era: Late 19th century (dated 1890)
History:

Disclaimers:
General wear consistent with age, including rubbing to leather, softening at corners and spine ends, and minor loss to gilt in high points; interior remains clean and structurally sound; gilt edges well preserved with minor handling wear.
