Additional Description: A charming antique giltwood display stand of scalloped rectangular form, raised on four bun feet and adorned with a continuous beaded border along the edge.
The top surface retains traces of its original decorative finish, with visible hand-painted geometric lining—likely once part of a more elaborate parcel-gilt or polychrome scheme. Over time, the surface has developed a beautifully worn patina, revealing layers of red bole beneath the gilding, a hallmark of traditional water-gilding techniques.
The sides feature a softly molded profile with a classic bead-and-reel motif, adding subtle ornamentation while maintaining a versatile, understated elegance.
The underside shows an incised mark reading “D.S.” within a circle and the number “230”, likely a workshop or inventory mark rather than a retail signature—common in late 19th to early 20th century European decorative production.
This piece functions beautifully as a riser for sculptures, boxes, candelabra, or treasured small objects—instantly elevating any vignette.
Era: Late 19th to Early 20th Century (circa 1880–1910)
History: Decorative plinths such as this were widely used in European interiors to elevate and showcase objects of importance—ranging from bronzes and clocks to devotional items and curiosities.
The use of red bole beneath gilding is a traditional technique associated with higher-quality finishing, allowing the warm undertone to enhance the richness of the gold surface. Over time, wear to the gilding reveals this bole, creating the highly sought-after “aged” aesthetic collectors love today.
Workshop or inventory markings like the circled “D.S.” and number “230” were often used internally by makers or retailers to track production batches or stock.
Provenance: France
Materials: Carved wood (giltwood with red bole underlayer)

Minor age-related wear to underside and feet
Structurally sound and stable
