A charming early 20th-century floral still life, painted in watercolor and gouache on paper and depicting a lush bouquet of yellow and blush roses arranged with lilac-colored blossoms, small white flowers, and abundant green foliage.
The flowers are loosely and confidently rendered, with layered washes and more opaque passages of color creating a soft, almost impressionistic quality. The large roses are particularly attractive, painted in warm shades of buttery yellow, peach, coral, and pale pink, while the lavender-purple blossoms provide a beautiful contrasting accent.
The bouquet is arranged in a broad, dark vase with a low rounded body, allowing the flowers to remain the focus of the composition. The muted gray-green paper ground gives the work a wonderfully atmospheric quality and makes the brighter floral colors appear especially luminous.
The work is signed at the lower right, although the artist's name is somewhat difficult to decipher. The signature appears to read something close to “Biagovini,” “Biagini,” or a similar Italian surname. Until a documented artist match can be established, I would list the work as signed but artist unidentified.
Presented under glass in a simple period gilt frame with a warm tan mat.
Era
Date: Circa 1920–1940
Period: Early 20th century
Origin: Continental Europe, possibly Italian
The apparent surname has an Italian character, but country of origin should remain attributed unless the signature can be securely identified.
Artist / Signature
Signed lower right.
The cursive signature appears to begin with a capital B and may read approximately:
“Biagovini”
or possibly
“Biagini” / “Biag…”
The final letters appear to terminate in an -ini / -ni type ending.
The signature is clearly intentional and contemporaneous with the painting, but I would avoid assigning the work to a specific artist without an exact documentary match.
History
Floral still lifes remained especially popular throughout Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, both as independent works of art and as refined domestic decoration.
Artists working in watercolor and gouache frequently favored flowers because the mediums allowed for both transparent washes and saturated opaque highlights, particularly effective for petals, foliage, and atmospheric backgrounds.
This example has a distinctly modern early 20th-century handling: rather than meticulously delineating every leaf and petal, the artist builds the bouquet through broad passages of color, allowing individual forms to dissolve into the composition at the edges.
The effect is decorative yet painterly, with the warm roses emerging beautifully against the subdued background.

The bouquet appears to include:
- Large yellow and blush roses
