Johann Heinrich Lips was a Swiss draughtsman and engraver known for his close associations with Johann Kaspar Lavater (whose Physiognomische Fragmente Lips illustrated) and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whom he portrayed. His works reflect Neoclassical ideals of moral virtue, anatomical precision, and Enlightenment thought.
Lips studied in Zürich and Rome, absorbing influences from Winckelmann’s classical theories and Italian masters. His portraits and academic figure studies often balance intellectual rigor with expressive humanity — aligning him with the Goethezeit cultural circle. Drawings from his later years (post-1800) are quite scarce compared to his engravings.
