Additional Description
Handcrafted repoussé metal covered casket modeled as a recumbent deer with elegantly elongated neck, stylized antlers, and finely engraved floral arabesques throughout. The removable lid follows the contours of the animal's back while the body forms a generous interior suitable for jewelry, letters, keepsakes, or decorative display.
The underside retains its original paper label reading "Khmer Rep," identifying production during the Khmer Republic period (1970–1975). Rich hand-worked decoration and whimsical sculptural form make this an exceptional decorative object for a cabinet of curiosities or eclectic interior.
Era
Khmer Republic (Cambodia), circa 1970–1975
History
Following Cambodian independence, skilled metalworkers continued centuries-old repoussé and chasing traditions while adapting their work for export markets. During the brief Khmer Republic period (1970–1975), workshops produced decorative boxes, animal-form vessels, trays, and religious-inspired objects that blended traditional Khmer ornament with forms intended for Western collectors.
Pieces retaining Khmer Republic labels are increasingly collectible because they can be confidently dated to this short historical period immediately preceding the Khmer Rouge era.
Although made for export, these handcrafted works demonstrate genuine repoussé techniques and traditional decorative vocabulary rather than modern cast reproductions.
