Painted Portrait Miniature #3 - Madonna and Child
Virgin Mary with baby Jesus done in a classical devotional style typical of 19th century religious miniatures
Mary is clothed in white, with serene expression and halo, holding an olive brand (symbol of peace) and the Christ Child is shown looking directly forward
Hand-painted on porcelain or ivorine based on smoothness
Signed "Rossi" is left margin - relatively common signature among Italian miniature painters, and may reference Giuseppe Rossi, though this "Rossi" was likely a workshop or studio painter in Italy
Bone or ivory veneer laid in radial segments in sunburst deisng, affixed to wooden mount
Backing pa appears to be recycled book or ecclesiastical Latin text
Oval glass window and metal tacking ring are typical 19th century framing methods
Partially legible label reading "Florence" or Firenze - possibly Galleria Firenze or something similar
Handwritten note on top possible says "Madonna di Paradiso" or "di Pompei" which could indicate the iconographic source or the chapel image it's based on
Circa 1860-1890, or up to early 1900s
