Additional Description:
A finely cast pair of antique gilt metal decorative mounts executed in an ornate Rococo Revival style, featuring asymmetrical scrolling acanthus foliage surrounding a central shell motif beneath a cartouche-like crest. The deeply modeled relief and flowing curves are characteristic of French Louis XV-inspired ornamentation, designed to add movement and sculptural richness to fine furniture or decorative objects.
Each mount retains multiple original mounting holes, indicating their former use as applied ornamentation on cabinetry, commodes, writing tables, caskets, clock cases, or architectural decorative elements. The backs reveal rough cast surfaces and oxidation consistent with 19th-century decorative metal casting techniques.
The surviving gilt surface exhibits attractive age-darkened patina with highlights of warm brass tones emerging across raised areas, enhancing the dimensional quality of the relief work. Their compact scale and elegant form make them highly versatile as collectible architectural fragments, decorative accents, or restoration components for period furniture.
Era:
Late 19th century to early 20th century, likely circa 1880–1910.
History:
During the 19th century, French Rococo Revival furnishings heavily incorporated gilt bronze and brass mounts inspired by the lavish decorative arts of the Louis XV period. Such mounts adorned luxury furniture and decorative objects, serving both ornamental and protective functions while elevating craftsmanship and visual sophistication.
Furniture mounts of this type were often custom-fitted to case furniture, particularly commodes, vitrines, writing desks, and jewel caskets. Surviving examples are now sought after by collectors, restorers, and designers for their sculptural decorative appeal.
Provenance:
Likely French or Continental European origin.
Materials:
Cast gilt metal, likely brass or spelter with gilt finish.
Dimensions:
Each approximately 3” H x 3.5” W.
Disclaimers:
Antique condition with age-related wear including oxidation, surface rubbing, loss to gilt finish, scratches, and casting irregularities consistent with age and manufacture. Mounting holes from original installation remain visible. Areas of oxidation and darkened patina present throughout reverse surfaces.
