Additional Description
A handsome group of three 18th-century French literary volumes, comprising Volumes II, III, and IV of Les Aventures de l’Infortuné Napolitain, ou Mémoires du Seigneur Rozelli, published in London in 1781.
Each volume retains its original mottled brown calf binding with richly gilt-decorated spine compartments, floral tools, and contrasting dark green title labels reading “Bibliothèque Amusante” and “Aventures de l’Infortuné Napolitain.” The small format and elaborate gilt spines give the set a particularly charming decorative presence.
The title page identifies the work as:
Les Aventures de l’Infortuné Napolitain, ou Mémoires du Seigneur Rozelli
with the pictured volume marked “Tome Second” and dated M.DCC.LXXXI — 1781.
The three surviving books are numbered 2, 3, and 4, indicating that Volume I is absent.
Era
1781
Late 18th century / Louis XVI period.
History
Les Aventures de l’Infortuné Napolitain belongs to the popular 18th-century tradition of memoir-style adventure fiction, in which the supposed recollections of a traveler or unfortunate gentleman provided a framework for episodes of romance, danger, displacement, intrigue, and social observation.
The work circulated in French in multiple editions during the 18th century and reflects contemporary appetite for picaresque and pseudo-memoir literature—stories presented with the immediacy of personal experience even when literary in nature.
These volumes were incorporated into a decorative series labeled “Bibliothèque Amusante,” or “Entertaining Library,” a fitting designation for compact literary works intended for private reading and domestic libraries.
Provenance
Sourced in France.
Materials
Mottled calf leather bindings
Gilt-tooled spines
Green morocco or leather title labels
Laid paper
Printed text
Volumes Present
Volumes II, III, and IV
Volume I is not present.
Dimensions
Please provide the exact height, width, and thickness of one volume and I can add them.
