This is a retelling of the voyages of Jean-François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse, the French explorer who famously disappeared during his Pacific expedition (1785–1788). His disappearance was one of the great “hero-mysteries” of the late Enlightenment and early Romantic period.
For 19th-century French Catholics, Lapérouse = courage, faith, and stoic exploration. So this book was both adventure literature and moral example.
