Additional Description:
An 18th-century Danish copperplate prospect titled “Soröe,” depicting the historic town of Sorø across the waters of Sorø Lake. Boats and figures animate the lake, while livestock and agricultural workers occupy the foreground. The distant townscape is dominated by the historic church and academy complex.
A small engraved monogram beneath the lower-left corner appears to read “A L,” likely referring to Danish engraver Alexia von Lode. A documented engraving by von Lode titled Soröe, measuring approximately 16 × 24 cm and issued in 1767, closely corresponds with the present work. The plate was likely produced for Erik Pontoppidan’s monumental topographical publication, Den Danske Atlas.

Published during the Danish Enlightenment, Den Danske Atlas was an ambitious illustrated survey of Denmark’s geography, towns, institutions, and historic sites. Its engraved prospects provided detailed visual records of the kingdom’s principal settlements.
This view records Sorø before later rebuilding significantly altered the academy complex. Sorø Academy traces its origins to a medieval abbey and was reestablished during the 18th century following a major benefaction from Ludvig Holberg.

The print has not been removed from the frame; therefore, the complete margins, plate mark, reverse, and any publication text remain unexamined. The lower-left engraved mark appears to read “A L” and is attributed to Alexia von Lode based on comparison with a documented 1767 Soröe engraving, but the attribution and atlas source have not been independently confirmed through examination outside the frame.
The gilt frame shows scratches, spotting, abrasions, finish loss, and wear along the corners and edges. The rear covering is torn and lifting in areas, with old tape, punctures, stains, and later hanging wire. Please review all photographs closely.
