Additional Description: An ornate pierced brass furniture escutcheon featuring flowing Rococo scrollwork and a central cartouche motif. The openwork design incorporates symmetrical foliate scrolls and decorative points radiating from the central field.
The reverse shows the rough sand-cast surface typical of 19th-century furniture mounts. Evidence of original mounting points indicates it once framed a keyhole or decorative panel on a cabinet, writing desk, or chest.
The pierced design allowed the escutcheon to function both as decorative hardware and as a protective surround for a lock mechanism. Over time the brass has developed a warm aged patina.
Era: Mid to Late 19th Century
History: Decorative brass escutcheons such as this were widely used on Victorian furniture, particularly on cabinets, desks, and writing boxes. Rococo Revival designs became fashionable across Europe and America in the mid-19th century, echoing the asymmetrical scrollwork of 18th-century French decorative arts.
Provenance: Architectural salvage / antique furniture mount
Materials: Cast Brass
Dimensions; TBD
Disclaimers: Surface wear consistent with age
Areas of oxidation and patina
Original mounting hardware not present
