The exterior veneer is burl walnut (that swirling, mottled, “map of the world” grain).
The interior is stained fruitwood or mahogany secondary wood.
The box has string inlay (the repeated thin line border) and a central shield-shaped inlay cartouche (likely once engraved with initials, now worn).
Corners are hand-mitered.
Hinges are original Victorian brass barrel hinges.
