Additional Description
Charming antique carved wood casket or jewelry box featuring a raised figural lid with two carved birds among lily pads or pond foliage. The body is rectangular with paneled sides, carved floral sprays, textured grounds, molded edges, and shaped bracket-style feet. The front retains a small keyhole, and the interior opens to a single storage compartment with later blue-gray ribbed fabric lining to the base and inside lid.
The carving has a warm honey-brown finish with darker patinated recesses, giving the piece a highly decorative Black Forest / Continental folk-art feel. The bird-and-lily-pad motif gives it a sweet nature-inspired quality, ideal for jewelry, keepsakes, or tabletop display.
Era
Late 19th to early 20th century, likely circa 1880–1920.
History
Carved wood boxes of this type were popular throughout the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, especially in Continental Europe. Many are broadly described as Black Forest style, a term often used for richly carved Alpine and Swiss/German-inspired decorative objects featuring animals, foliage, hunting motifs, birds, bears, and naturalistic scenes.
This example appears to follow that decorative tradition, though without a visible maker’s mark or regional stamp, it is best described as Black Forest style / Continental carved wood rather than definitively Swiss Black Forest.
Provenance
Private collection. Additional provenance unknown.
Materials
Carved wood
Brass hinges and lock plate
Later or replaced fabric lining

Please add exact measurements.
