Item: Antique French Gilt-Brass Oval Portrait Frame with Ribbon Crest, Late 19th / Early 20th Century
Additional Description
A beautifully decorative French oval portrait frame in gilt brass, designed in a refined Louis XVI Revival taste with a prominent ribbon-and-bow crest and finely detailed foliate ornament.
The frame surrounds an oval photographic portrait and features a narrow repeating leaf border around the aperture, complemented by delicate beading and an openwork crest of scrolling foliage centered by a large tied ribbon motif. The overall effect is elegant and distinctly French, balancing neoclassical symmetry with softly romantic ornament.
The reverse retains its original hinged easel support, allowing the frame to stand independently on a tabletop, dressing table, mantel, or desk. A small suspension ring at the back also suggests that it could alternatively be hung.
The surviving period photograph of a formally dressed gentleman adds considerable charm, though the frame is equally suitable for displaying another photograph, miniature, or small work on paper.

History
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, small portrait frames became increasingly fashionable as photography entered the domestic sphere. French makers often revived decorative vocabularies from the 18th century, particularly the Louis XVI style, incorporating ribbon bows, laurel, beading, and symmetrical foliate ornament into gilt-metal frames intended for intimate family portraits.
Frames of this type were frequently placed on dressing tables, writing desks, bedside tables, and mantelpieces, where they functioned as both personal keepsakes and decorative objects.
