An ornate late 19th-century French oval jewelry or trinket casket, richly decorated in gilt metal and centered by a finely painted portrait miniature depicting Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, or a courtly beauty represented in her likeness.
The hinged oval lid is bordered by a finely cast foliate and leaf-tip molding and embellished with applied scrolling rocaille ornaments against a textured gilt ground. At the center is an oval miniature portrait beneath glass, depicting an elegantly dressed 18th-century lady with powdered hair, pearls, and a pale blue gown.
The portrait closely follows the romanticized imagery associated with Marie Antoinette, whose likeness was frequently reproduced in decorative arts during the 19th century. The miniature appears to bear a small painted inscription or signature reading "Isabel" along its lower and right edges.
