Additional Description:
An elegant antique French Rococo-style picture frame, richly cast in gilt bronze (or ormolu-toned metal), featuring an exuberant openwork design of scrolling acanthus, florals, and shell motifs.
The frame is beautifully sculptural, with:
A pierced rocaille crest at the top
Flowing asymmetrical foliate scrollwork throughout
A shaped inner border with finely textured detailing
A built-in easel support for tabletop display
The openwork design gives the piece a light, lace-like quality while still maintaining a strong visual presence—perfect for layering into a vignette, vanity display, or bookshelf styling.
The reverse retains its original-style backing plate and hinged easel mechanism, allowing for both stability and ease of use. The gilt surface shows a warm, aged patina with subtle variation, enhancing its antique character.
Currently fitted with a vintage black-and-white portrait, which complements the romantic European aesthetic beautifully.
Era:
Late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1890–1920), in the Louis XV / Rococo Revival style
History:
During the late 19th century, French decorative arts saw a revival of earlier Louis XV Rococo forms, particularly in small luxury objects such as frames, mirrors, and dressing table accessories. These pieces were often produced in cast bronze or spelter with gilt finishes, designed to evoke the opulence of 18th-century interiors while remaining accessible to a broader market.
Frames like this were commonly used on vanities, writing desks, or bedside tables—intimate objects meant to display cherished portraits.
Provenance:
France; acquired through the European antiques trade.
Materials:
Cast bronze or spelter with gilt finish
Metal backing plate
Glass insert
Dimensions:
(leave blank)
Disclaimers:
Wear to gilding consistent with age, including areas of softening and patina
Minor oxidation visible to reverse and recessed areas
Backing plate shows age and handling wear
