Additional Description:
An elegant and highly decorative silverplated centerpiece bowl or handled serving compote by the historic American maker Crown Silver Co. The piece features a dramatic lobed and fluted basin with deeply molded repoussé-style Rococo ornament around the rim, including scrolling acanthus flourishes, shell motifs, floral detailing, and textured cartouche-like reserves.
The interior is beautifully formed with radiating gadrooned fluting that draws the eye inward toward a raised central cup or insert, likely intended for floral arranging, fruit presentation, or possibly a centerpiece configuration. The sculptural form gives the piece strong visual movement and reflects the exuberant Rococo Revival taste popular in late 19th- and early 20th-century silverplate design.
Particularly striking are the twisted side handles fitted with turned ivory-tone grips, likely bone, ivory substitute, or early celluloid, creating a refined contrast against the gleaming silverplate surface. The handles terminate in ornate finials that complement the scrolling decorative border.
The underside bears the hallmark of Crown Silver Company beneath a crown device, indicating manufacture by the American silverplate firm known for ornate Victorian and early 20th-century hollowware.
Era:
Late 19th to Early 20th Century, likely circa 1890–1920
History:
Crown Silver Company produced decorative silverplated serving wares during the height of the American silverplate industry, when affluent households favored elaborate presentation pieces for dining tables and parlors. Rococo Revival styling remained especially popular for entertaining wares because of its association with luxury European decorative arts traditions.
Handled centerpiece bowls such as this were commonly used for fruit displays, floral arrangements, desserts, or decorative table centerpieces during formal dining service.
Provenance:
From a private estate collection.
Materials:
Silverplate over metal alloy; ivory-tone handle grips (possibly bone, early composite, or celluloid); cast and stamped metal components.
