Additional Description:
A finely bound French Catholic devotional volume titled Paroissien Romain – Très Complet, specifically the Partie d’Été (Summer section), published by Maison A. Mame et Fils of Tours, one of the most respected ecclesiastical publishers of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The book is bound in rich dark leather with a supple, pebbled texture, featuring a delicate gilt monogram "DB" to the upper cover—likely a personal devotional initial. The spine is elegantly tooled with raised bands and retains crisp gilt titling reading Paroissien Romain – Été.
A standout feature is the brilliantly preserved gilt fore-edge, which reveals a subtle fore-edge painting visible when the pages are fanned—an especially desirable decorative element rarely found in such well-kept condition. The interior is equally refined, with crisp typography, red ruled borders, and beautifully executed devotional engravings, including Marian imagery and ornamental ecclesiastical designs.
The book retains its original moiré silk endpapers framed by intricate gilt dentelle borders, adding a luxurious finishing detail typical of higher-quality devotional bindings from this period.
A particularly elegant example—both devotional object and decorative artifact—appealing to collectors of French religious books, fine bindings, and fore-edge painted volumes.
Era:
Late 19th to early 20th century
History:
Paroissiens Romains were comprehensive Catholic prayer books intended for lay use, containing the Mass, liturgical calendar, and devotional texts aligned with the Roman Rite.
Maison Mame of Tours was one of France’s most prominent religious publishers, known for producing finely crafted devotional books in both accessible and luxury formats. Seasonal divisions such as this Partie d’Été allowed for practical liturgical use throughout the year.
Fore-edge painting, as seen here, is a traditional decorative technique dating back to earlier centuries, revived in later bindings as a mark of refinement and craftsmanship.
Provenance:
France (Tours; Maison A. Mame et Fils)
Materials:
Leather binding with gilt tooling, gilt-edged pages with fore-edge decoration, printed paper, silk moiré endpapers
Dimensions:
Not provided
Disclaimers/Condition:
Good antique condition. Leather shows light age-related wear and softening, particularly at edges and spine. Gilt detailing remains strong and legible. Fore-edge gilding is bright with visible painted decoration when fanned. Interior pages are clean with minor toning and occasional light wear. Structurally sound.
