Item: Large Ornate Victorian Rococo Revival Cast Metal Easel / Display Stand
Additional Description
Highly decorative Victorian Rococo Revival tabletop easel cast in white metal, spelter, or silver-painted cast iron. The stand features exuberant scrolling acanthus ornament, shell motifs, pierced openwork construction, and an elaborate cartouche crest. Designed to display small paintings, photographs, devotional plaques, mirrors, books, sheet music, or presentation pieces, the easel folds via a rear support leg and offers excellent decorative presence despite its relatively compact size.
The casting exhibits deep relief ornament characteristic of mid-to-late nineteenth-century Rococo Revival design and retains traces of its original silvered or metallic finish.
Era
Circa 1860–1890
History
The Rococo Revival movement enjoyed enormous popularity throughout Europe and America during the Victorian period. Inspired by the asymmetrical ornament of eighteenth-century French decorative arts, manufacturers produced elaborate easels, frames, mirror stands, clock supports, and decorative accessories intended for parlors, libraries, and drawing rooms.
Small display easels such as this were commonly used to exhibit:
Cabinet photographs
Miniature portraits
Framed devotional images
Needlework panels
Watercolors and engravings
Presentation certificates
The highly pierced construction reduced weight while maximizing visual richness, making these stands attractive decorative objects even when not actively displaying artwork.

Cast rear support leg
