The robe, in a rare pink/peach alabaster, bears a prominent Sacred Heart motif: a flaming heart encircled by the crown of thorns, a central emblem of Catholic devotion
Such works were produced in Italian alabaster centers such as Volterra, as well as in France, for export to Europe and the Americas
The Sacred Heart devotion was especially prominent in the 19th century, following papal endorsements (notably Pope Pius IX in 1856) and the spread of this imagery in churches and private chapels. Busts such as this would have served as devotional objects in Catholic homes or parish settings, embodying both artistry and religious meaning.
Pink alabaster is less common than white, and its warm hue enhances the piece’s visual and emotional impact. Two-tone alabaster busts are more desirable to collectors than uniform white examples.
