A striking late 19th-century silverplate brides basket or elevated compote by the renowned Meriden Britannia Company, marked “Meriden B. Company” with pattern number “1770” to the underside.
This elegant pedestal-form serving piece embodies the fascination with Japonisme and the Aesthetic Movement that swept decorative arts during the Victorian era. The shallow circular dish is richly decorated with engraved and etched botanical motifs inspired by East Asian design aesthetics, featuring stylized foliage, bamboo-like elements, and asymmetrical compositions rendered in delicate tonal engraving.
The outer rim is beautifully adorned with a continuous repoussé-style border depicting birds amidst flowering foliage and naturalistic landscape ornament. Rising above the bowl is a graceful swing handle accented with cast floral ornament at the crest, enhancing the refined silhouette of the piece.
The raised pedestal base gives the form an elegant presentation suitable for display on a Victorian dining table or parlor setting. Originally intended as a brides basket or centerpiece, pieces such as this would have been used to present sweets, fruit, flowers, or calling cards during formal entertaining.
Meriden Britannia Company was one of the premier American silverplate manufacturers of the 19th century and became especially celebrated for its innovative Aesthetic Movement designs during the 1870s–1890s.
