Tazzas, or elevated serving dishes, trace their origins to Renaissance Italy, where they were used to present fruit, sweetmeats, nuts, and other delicacies at the table. Often set on a stem or pedestal foot, they combined practical function with display and were produced in materials ranging from silver and maiolica to glass, porcelain, and later decorative metals. By the 18th and 19th centuries, tazzas had become popular throughout Europe as elegant table and cabinet objects, prized as much for their sculptural form as for their usefulness.
