History: Jean-Marc Nattier was one of the most celebrated French portrait painters of the Rococo period and the preferred court artist of Louis XV. Known for his elegant, idealized portrayals of French aristocracy, Nattier often depicted sitters as mythological figures, blending court portraiture with classical allegory. Sophie of France, known as Madame Sophie, was the youngest daughter of King Louis XV and Queen Marie Leszczyńska. Raised at the French court at Versailles, she was known for her piety, modesty, and reserved demeanor rather than political ambition. Like many royal children, she was portrayed in formal court portraits intended to reinforce dynastic prestige and royal continuity.
