A striking pair of late 19th-century French gilt-bronze wall sconces executed in the dramatic Empire Revival taste, each designed with three scrolling candle arms and a richly modeled eagle-form backplate.
At the center of each sconce, a finely cast eagle with outstretched wings is framed within an elongated oval surround of stylized feathers and scrolling ornament. Above, the backplate rises into a bold radiating palmette or anthemion crest, while additional foliate and pendant decoration extends below.
Three curved arms project from the lower portion of each sconce, terminating in molded candle cups and retaining old faux wax candle sleeves. The richly chased and cast surface retains a warm, aged gilt finish with deeper patination in the recesses, emphasizing the sculptural relief.
The combination of imperial eagle, palmette ornament, scrolling foliage, and symmetrical three-light arrangement gives the pair a particularly commanding architectural presence.

The French Empire style developed during the reign of Napoleon I in the early 19th century and drew heavily upon the art and architecture of ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt. Among its most recognizable motifs were eagles, laurel wreaths, palmettes, winged figures, torches, and other symbols associated with imperial authority and classical antiquity.
Gilt bronze was especially favored for Empire lighting and decorative objects, allowing makers to combine highly detailed casting with rich gilded surfaces. Surviving early 19th-century French Empire sconces frequently employ palmettes, foliate ornament, swans, classical vessels, and other similarly antiquarian motifs.
During the Napoleon III period, particularly in the second half of the 19th century, French decorators enthusiastically revived earlier historical styles. Empire forms became fashionable once again, and makers produced chandeliers, sconces, furniture mounts, and decorative accessories drawing directly from First Empire prototypes. Documented Napoleon III gilt-bronze Empire-style sconces survive from this period.
The present pair is particularly distinguished by its dramatic eagle motif and richly modeled feathered surround, making them strong examples of the French 19th-century fascination with Napoleonic decorative vocabulary.
