A beautifully shaped Victorian writing slope in black lacquered papier-mâché, richly embellished with iridescent mother-of-pearl inlay and delicate gilt decoration. The scalloped rectangular lid is centered with a floral bouquet motif composed of shimmering shell inlay, framed by a border of scattered blossoms, foliage, and fine gilded scrollwork. The interior opens to reveal a deep cobalt-blue velvet writing surface with gilt decorative borders, along with fitted upper compartments for paper, writing tools, or correspondence accessories. The overall silhouette, dark ground, luminous shell inlay, and refined decorative scheme are strongly characteristic of mid-19th century English papier-mâché wares inspired by Jennens & Bettridge and related makers.
