A decorative vintage balance scale combining richly ornamented gilt metal with polished green onyx.
The central standard is formed from turned and shaped sections of translucent green onyx, displaying attractive natural veining in pale green, cream, and soft brown tones. Gilt-metal fittings accent the stone throughout, including a foliate base mount, turned collars, and an ornate upper balance arm with scrolling acanthus-inspired decoration.
Suspended from fine gilt chains are two shallow circular weighing pans, creating a symmetrical and highly decorative silhouette. The piece stands on a broad circular green onyx base raised on small gilt feet.
More decorative than utilitarian in character, this type of balance scale was often produced as a desk, library, or interior accessory, where the symbolism of balance and justice added visual and thematic appeal.

Decorative balance scales became popular interior accessories during the 19th and 20th centuries, often inspired by traditional apothecary, jeweler’s, and merchant scales.
By the mid-20th century, ornamental versions were frequently produced in combinations of gilt metal, marble, alabaster, and onyx, especially in Italy and other parts of Continental Europe. These pieces were intended primarily for display rather than precise measurement and often emphasized luxurious materials and classical ornament.
Green onyx was particularly fashionable in decorative objects of the period, valued for its translucency, banded coloration, and ability to complement gilt-bronze or brass mounts.
The present example reflects that decorative tradition, combining the familiar visual language of a balance scale with a more sculptural and ornamental treatment suited to a desk, library, or salon interior.
