Additional Description: A decorative antique oval picture frame with a broad gilt inner molding surrounded by an elaborate pierced border of scrolling rocaille, acanthus leaves, floral details, and small shell-like flourishes.
The frame is constructed on a substantial joined wooden oval with applied molded ornament around the perimeter. The pierced decoration creates a lace-like silhouette, while the aged gilt surface retains warm gold, bronze, and darkened brown tones that emphasize the relief.
The recessed oval opening would suit a portrait, miniature painting, photograph, needlework panel, or mirror plate. Its sculptural profile and naturally aged finish also allow it to display beautifully as an empty architectural frame.
Era: Vintage, likely circa 1940–1970.
History: This decorative frame was likely produced during the mid-20th century in a historicist Rococo or Victorian Revival style. Oval portrait frames with scrolling gilt ornament remained popular for formal interiors, and vintage reproductions often used molded composition decoration applied over a wooden base to imitate earlier carved and gilded examples.
Provenance:
Acquired through the antiques and decorative arts trade. Earlier ownership and original contents are unknown.
Materials:
Wooden frame foundation, applied composition or gesso ornament, and gilt or gold-painted finish.
Dimensions:
Please provide:
Overall height and width
Interior sight opening height and width
Frame depth
Condition:
Antique condition with wear and losses consistent with age. The gilt surface shows rubbing, darkening, oxidation-like discoloration, scratches, abrasions, spotting, and areas of exposed brown ground.
There are visible cracks through the molded inner border and applied ornament, along with scattered chips, small losses, repaired or weakened sections, and irregularities throughout the pierced perimeter. The reverse shows age-related wear, old mounting holes, scratches, abrasions, joint lines, surface losses, and possible historic insect activity. Any current insect activity has not been assessed.
No glass, backing, hanging hardware, artwork, or mirror plate is included unless supplied separately.
Disclaimers:
The exact country of origin, date, and maker are unknown. The ornament is believed to be composition or gesso applied over wood, but the materials have not been professionally tested. The present gilding may include original, refreshed, or later-painted areas. The frame should be handled carefully by the solid wooden body rather than by the fragile pierced ornament. Any artwork installed should be fitted by a professional framer.
