Additional Description:
An ornate cast-metal desk letter holder or correspondence rack in the Rococo Revival taste. The upright back is formed from elaborate pierced scrollwork with curling acanthus leaves, floral details, and symmetrical foliate flourishes. The rectangular base incorporates an open diamond-lattice surface and rests on four scrolling feet.
A small later plaque mounted to the front reads:
“Sandy & Bob
Sept. 2, 1972”
The plaque likely commemorates a wedding or anniversary and appears to have been added after manufacture. The piece would have been used on a desk or writing table to hold letters, invitations, calling cards, or other correspondence.
Era:
Vintage, likely mid-20th century; personalized in 1972
History:
Decorative letter racks were popular accessories for writing desks throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. This example draws on Victorian and Rococo Revival models through its pierced acanthus scrollwork, arched silhouette, and scrolling feet.
Although the design imitates earlier cast-brass desk accessories, the construction and personalized 1972 plaque suggest this is most likely a 20th-century decorative revival piece rather than a Victorian original.
Provenance:
Personalized for “Sandy & Bob,” dated September 2, 1972; later private collection
Materials:
Cast brass or brass-finished metal, enamel or printed commemorative plaque, metal fasteners
Dimensions:
Dimensions forthcoming
Disclaimers:
Vintage condition with age-related wear. The metal shows tarnish, oxidation, darkened recesses, rubbing, scratches, accumulated residue, and variation to the gold-toned finish. Minor casting irregularities and small areas of roughness are present throughout.
The pierced ornament and projecting feet should be handled carefully. The underside shows visible screws, hardware, and an open lattice construction. The personalized plaque appears later-added and shows light surface wear. No maker’s mark has been located, and the precise metal composition has not been tested. Please review all photographs closely.
