Blue and Gold Cartonnage Book - Voyages et Aventures de La Perouse
Tours Ad. Mame & Cie 1848
Title: Voyages et Aventures de Lapérouse
Author: F. Valentin
Publisher: A. Mame et Cie., Tours
Edition: Cinquième Édition (5th)
Date: 1848
Series: Bibliothèque de la Jeunesse Chrétienne
This was a prestige moral-educational series approved by the Archbishop of Tours and aimed at middle- and upper-class Catholic youth. Think: adventure + heroism + piety.
This is a retelling of the voyages of Jean-François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse, the French explorer who famously disappeared during his Pacific expedition (1785–1788). His disappearance was one of the great “hero-mysteries” of the late Enlightenment and early Romantic period.
For 19th-century French Catholics, Lapérouse = courage, faith, and stoic exploration. So this book was both adventure literature and moral example.
polychrome publisher’s prize binding by Mame, one of the most important decorative publishers in France.
Blue glazed cloth (not leather — though it mimics leather texture)
Heavily gilt “cathedral style” panel stamp front and back
Gilt compartment spine with ornamental scrollwork
Typical of 1840s–1860s religious gift books
Often awarded in Catholic schools as prize or merit books
