Prints of Classical Sculpture & Architecture - Campanella - Torso of Male
Sculpture Fragment of Male Figure
18th C (1780-1800)
16"" x 10.5""
classical fragmentary torso, engraved by Angelo Campanella (Italian, c. 1746–1811) as the engraver. Born in Rome, he trained under Giovanni Volpato. He engraved the statues of twelve apostles found in the church of St. John Lateran; and some of the plates for Gavin Hamilton's Schola Itálica, including The Presentation in the Temple after Fra Bartolommeo. Other engravings include Christ with the Disciples at Emmaus, The Massacre of the Innocents, and Psyche and Cupid after Raphael.
A sculptural torso of a male figure, rendered in exquisite detail.
The torso rests on drapery with hints of rocky ground or a sculptor's base.
The missing head and arms mark this as a study after an antique fragment, possibly based on a sculpture in a Roman or Venetian collection.
Antique sculpture fragments, especially torso studies
Commonly compiled in the 18th century for Grand Tour scholars, artists, and aristocrats interested in classical form
Likely source is ""Raccolta di Statue Antiche e Moderne""
(Collection of Ancient and Modern Statues)
Published in Rome or Venice, late 18th century
Campanella was a known contributor to this type of series, especially following the popularity of the Museo Pio-Clementino (Vatican sculpture museum cataloged in prints) and the antiquities in the Villa Negroni and Borghese collections.
