18th C English School Prints - Hercules and Iole
Hercules and Iole
17th C (c 1630-1650)
16" x 10.75"
Copperplate engraving on laid paper
Hercules and Iole (or possibly Omphale, depending on interpretation)
The scene shows Hercules holding a club and accompanied by a nude female figure. The lion skin, club, and serpent confirm the male figure as Hercules (Heracles). The woman may represent Iole, whom Hercules took captive and loved, or in some readings, Omphale, the Lydian queen to whom he was enslaved.
Giovanni Campanella (active c. 1620–1660)
Inscription: “Campanella fecit” = “Campanella made this.”
Campanella was a 17th-century Italian engraver associated with reproducing classical statues and Renaissance frescoes in print form. His style aligns closely with Roman engraving workshops of the early Baroque period.
