A beautifully constructed antique quarter-sawn oak stationary and smokers' cabinet featuring Gothic-inspired metal corner mounts, paneled double doors, and a fitted interior with two interior drawers, and one lower drawer with divided compartments.
The cabinet mechanically opens to reveal a highly functional interior arrangement for correspondence storage (by pulling the lower drawer), including: two graduated drawers with original pierced metal pulls, divided lower compartments for smoking accessories (with match striker and ashtray) and writing utensils, original metal mounts and hinges, decorative side carrying handles and plinth base construction.
The richly figured tiger-grain oak veneer is particularly striking across the doors and lid, with strong medullary ray patterning typical of Arts & Crafts-era oak furniture.
A metal presentation plaque mounted to the lid reads: "Presented to W. Marsh by a few friends on the occasion of his leaving Silksworth, 1913." This inscription firmly dates the cabinet to the early 20th c and adds personal historical character to the piece.
