novelty snuff box or pill box, crafted in the form of a giant 5 Franc coin (dated 1836, République Française).
late 19th to early 20th century (often around 1880–1900), not contemporary with the actual 1836 coin date.
They were machine-stamped with realistic coin designs and then hollowed out to serve as a container.
The hole in the center of one side is sometimes seen, either from wear or where a former clasp/fastener was attached.
