Item: Classical Relief Plaque Fragment Depicting a Youthful Male Head
Additional Description
Small decorative wall plaque or architectural fragment modeled after Greco-Roman sculpture. The piece depicts the head of a youthful male with softly rendered facial features, short wavy hair, and an idealized classical expression. Executed in a cast composition material with an aged stone-like finish and fitted with a wire loop for wall display.
The reverse suggests it was intended as a decorative hanging ornament rather than a functional architectural element. The modeling appears to draw inspiration from ancient Roman portraiture or Renaissance interpretations of classical antiquity.
Era
Likely mid-20th century decorative reproduction, circa 1950–1980.
History
Classical faces and architectural fragments became popular decorative motifs during the mid-20th century, particularly in neoclassical, Grand Tour, and Mediterranean-inspired interiors. Many were cast from plaster, composition stone, resin, or chalkware and finished to resemble aged marble or archaeological finds. Such pieces were often displayed in libraries, studies, garden rooms, and eclectic interiors alongside reproductions of antique sculpture.
While inspired by ancient sculpture, this example appears to have been produced as a decorative object rather than being an actual archaeological fragment.
Provenance
Private collection.
Materials
Cast composition material (possibly plaster, chalkware, or resin composite)
Aged faux-stone finish
Metal hanging loop
Dimensions
Approx. hand-sized; exact measurements TBD.
Disclaimers
Surface wear, abrasions, scattered losses, and finish variations consistent with age and decorative use. Minor edge chipping and imperfections visible throughout. Examination of the reverse suggests a cast decorative object rather than carved stone. Not examined under magnification.
