Additional Description: A sculptural 19th-century French giltwood display stand of serpentine outline, designed in the Louis XV revival taste and dating to the Napoleon III period. The stand features a richly curved profile, beaded lower border, and applied floral garland ornament to the sides, all finished in a mellow gilt surface with attractive time-softened patina. Raised on small feet and hollowed beneath, the stand was intended as a decorative plinth or surtout base for the display of urns, clocks, porcelain, or centerpiece arrangements.
The underside reveals traditional 19th-century workshop construction, with hollowed body and simple bracing, confirming its antique decorative character. The surface shows honest wear from use, including rubbing, losses, and marks to the gilded top—details that reinforce its age and decorative authenticity.
This is an excellent supporting piece for a layered French interior and works beautifully beneath urns, crystal, or other garniture objects.
Era: Napoleon III, circa 1860–1880
History: French decorative stands and display bases of this type were made to elevate prized objects in salons and formal interiors. Under Napoleon III, revival styles flourished, and small furnishing accessories such as plinths, jardinière stands, and garniture bases became important elements of richly decorated rooms. Their function was both practical and theatrical: to display treasured objects with added prominence.
Provenance: Belgium
Materials: Carved wood, gesso, gilding
Dimensions: TBD
Disclaimers: Visible wear, losses, stains, and rubbing to gilded surface; underside with expected age-related wear and construction irregularities; structurally decorative and best suited to display use
