Additional Description:
An elegant neoclassical-style wall-mounted hook rack cast in gilt-toned metal, centered by a classical urn finial draped with cascading laurel or ribbon garlands extending symmetrically to either side. The horizontal mounting bar is ornamented with geometric and bead-like motifs and fitted with four curved hanging hooks beneath.
The design draws heavily from Louis XVI and French neoclassical decorative vocabulary, particularly the use of urns, draped swags, ribbon bows, and symmetrical architectural ornamentation inspired by Greco-Roman forms. The casting retains a warm aged gilt-bronze appearance with darker patinated recesses accentuating the relief work.
The reverse shows textured casting surfaces and mounting holes for wall installation.
Era:
Early to mid-20th century, in the French neoclassical revival taste.
History:
Decorative wall hook racks inspired by Louis XVI and neoclassical French interiors became highly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These pieces merged utility with decorative sophistication and were commonly installed in entryways, dressing rooms, bedrooms, and bath spaces for hanging garments, ribbons, jewelry, or accessories.
The central urn motif references classical antiquity and was widely used in French decorative arts during the reigns of Louis XVI and later revival movements. Garland swags and ribbon motifs similarly reflect the restrained elegance associated with neoclassical interior ornament.
Provenance:
Likely French or Continental European in inspiration; exact maker unknown.
Materials:
Cast metal with gilt-toned finish and darkened patinated accents.
Dimensions:
10” W x 8” H x 1.5” D.
Disclaimers:
Vintage condition with age-related wear including surface scratches, rubbing and wear to gilt finish, oxidation/patina variation, casting irregularities, and minor bending or wear consistent with use. Mounting hardware not included.
