A striking, large-scale French portrait depicting an elegant young woman wearing a luminous strand of pearls, teardrop earrings, and a richly draped teal-blue gown over a delicate white lace bodice. Her direct yet serene expression, softly modeled complexion, and carefully rendered fabrics give the portrait an intimate and remarkably lifelike presence.
Signed “H. Rouillet” at the lower right and dated 1866, the work is presented beneath glass in an impressive oval giltwood and composition frame decorated with beading, fluting, and a continuous laurel border. The jewel-toned gown and beautifully rendered lace make this an especially decorative example of mid-19th-century portraiture.
