Additional Description:
An exceptionally decorative and visually commanding giltwood mirror, richly carved in the exuberant Rococo taste of the Louis XV period. The frame is crowned with an elaborate pierced crest centered by a stylized shell cartouche, radiating acanthus and foliate scrollwork that flows seamlessly into the asymmetrical sides. The carving throughout is deeply modeled and expressive, with layered movement that captures light beautifully across its gilded surface.
The sides are adorned with cascading floral sprays, scrolling volutes, and naturalistic leaf motifs, all carved with a lively hand that speaks to the continued 19th-century revival of 18th-century French design. The inner molding features a delicately worked border that frames the mirror plate with refinement, while the outer edges swell and curve in classic Rococo rhythm.
The gilding retains a warm, time-softened tone, with areas of underlying bole and red undertones subtly emerging—adding depth, authenticity, and that coveted “old Paris” atmosphere. The mirror plate appears to be later but harmonizes well with the frame, allowing the piece to function both as a decorative statement and a practical interior element.
This is a piece that transforms a space—equally at home anchoring a console, commode, or mantel—bringing with it the grandeur and romance of French interiors.
Era:
19th century, Louis XV Revival (circa 1850–1890)
History:
During the 19th century, particularly under the Second Empire, there was a renewed fascination with the opulence and artistry of the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods. Furniture and decorative arts from this era frequently reinterpreted earlier 18th-century designs, often with equal—if not greater—ornamentation. Giltwood mirrors were central to French interiors, used not only for function but as architectural focal points that enhanced light, scale, and luxury within a room.
This mirror reflects that tradition, drawing directly from Rococo precedents with its asymmetry, shell motifs, and fluid carving, while embodying the craftsmanship and decorative sensibility of the 19th-century revival period.
Provenance:
French or Continental European, acquired on the secondary market.
Materials:
Carved wood (giltwood frame); gesso and gilding; mirror plate (likely later replacement); traditional joinery.
Dimensions:
Leave blank
Disclaimers:
Condition consistent with age and use. Visible wear to gilding throughout, including areas of rubbing, minor losses, and exposure of underlying bole and wood. Scattered chips, surface abrasions, and age-related imperfections to the carved elements. One area of loss or repair noted at the crest (visible in photos). Back shows typical age wear, tool marks, and surface irregularities. Mirror plate appears to be later and shows light spotting and wear consistent with age. Overall structurally sound but should be handled and mounted with care due to age and composition.
