Polychrome Gilt-Carved Asian Dragon and Lotus Crest Fragment

Additional Description:
A richly carved openwork wooden crest fragment featuring mirrored dragon or phoenix-like mythological creatures flanking a central lotus blossom. The carving displays deeply pierced scrollwork, stylized clouds, curling foliage, and layered floral ornamentation executed in high relief. Traces of original polychrome decoration remain throughout, including dark green, cinnabar-red, blackened lacquer-like tones, and worn gilding highlighting the carved surfaces.
The reverse reveals important structural evidence of its original use: a deeply cut mortise or joinery socket indicating the piece was once slotted into a larger architectural or furniture framework. The substantial carving depth and construction suggest this was not a simple applique, but rather an integrated decorative crest or ornamental structural element. A later metal wire was added to the reverse for hanging display.
The inward-facing creatures surrounding the lotus create a balanced ceremonial composition often associated with protective and auspicious symbolism in Asian decorative arts.
