A dramatic vintage oil painting depicting a Dutch sailing warship navigating a chaotic naval engagement. The vessel heels through rough water beneath the red, white, and blue Dutch tricolor as flames, cannon smoke, and additional ships fill the distance.
The artist uses a rich palette of amber, ochre, deep green, smoky gray, and fiery orange, with lively brushwork and raised impasto throughout the clouds, flames, water, and ship’s rigging. The compact vertical format gives the composition an especially theatrical quality.
Signed indistinctly at the lower right and presented in a substantial giltwood and composition frame with classical fluting and molded borders.
