Additional Description
Handsome late Victorian photograph album retaining its original embossed leather covers, gilt-lettered spine marked "Album," brass closure hardware, and thick gilt-edged card pages designed to hold cabinet cards and cartes-de-visite. The covers feature an attractive geometric relief design typical of the Aesthetic Movement period, while the interior retains decorative printed presentation pages and numerous oval photograph apertures.
Albums of this type were prized family possessions, used to display cherished portraits of relatives, friends, and notable visitors in the Victorian home. The surviving brass clasp and richly gilt page edges provide a particularly elegant presentation.
Era
Late 19th Century, circa 1880–1900.
History
The widespread popularity of photography during the Victorian era created a booming market for decorative photograph albums. Families collected cartes-de-visite and cabinet photographs much as modern families collect digital images. Albums were often displayed in parlors and drawing rooms, where guests could browse family portraits and social connections.
The embossed geometric decoration reflects late Victorian design influences associated with the Aesthetic Movement and emerging Art Nouveau tastes. The elaborate gilt-edged pages and heavy binding suggest this was originally a quality example rather than an inexpensive household album.
